A credit card is a tool. In the right hands it can build a business or position a family for growth. In the wrong hands it can bankrupt a business or ruin a young families ability to cope. The issues that surround credit cards are numerous and some complex, but they can be generally divided into two piles. One for proper management of the privilege of credit and the other for the improper.

People get into credit card trouble in many ways but in the end the choice is binary, on or off, yes or no, right or wrong. Once you’ve gone wrong, the device itself starts to look like a help out or a hand up. If you could make bad choices and overspend, then whats stopping you from using the remaining credit to try and bail yourself out. The sickness that can grow from credit card abuse is phenomenal. A mighty Oak of debt can be created from this tiny acorn of a credit card.

With proper self management and precise record keeping, a credit card can be a great lever for getting things done. Especially its ability to finance disaster recovery, be it on a business trip, responding to a family emergency or getting the last two tickets to a great football game. As long as its done within your means and budget, the advantages are almost priceless.
